Top Cities for an Electrical Career

Working in the electrical field is a great career choice. It is a “hard” skill that will always be in demand. The economic principle of supply and demand works greatly in electrians’ favor because there just aren’t enough electricians. However, as with everything, there are differences from one location to another. This article looks at recent studies to show you some of the top cities for electricians right now.

A recent article on the AdvisorSmith website ranked the top 20 cities for electricians based on three criteria: average electrician salary, cost of living in a particular city, and concentration of electrician jobs. Based on those criteria, their top 5 cities were:

  • Decatur, IL – very high density, above average salaries and low cost of living.
  • St. Joseph, MO – high density and low cost of living
  • Kennewick-Richland, WA – average cost of living but very high electrical salaries
  • Saginaw, MI – good salaries and low cost of living
  • Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula, MS – very high density and low cost of living

Another article on the website Zippia.com used a very similar methodology to rank their top clities for electricians. The top five in the Zipplia list were the following:

  • Gary, IN
  • Kokomo, IN
  • Fairbanks, AK
  • Grand Forks, ND
  • Evansville, IN

One thing that is obvious comparing the two lists is that it’s not major cities where the most opportunity lies for electricians. It’s generally smaller, industrial cities. The state of Indiana figures prominently into the above list. So if you are seeking to maximize your career in the electrical field, you might need to be open to living in some areas you may not have considered in the past.

Finally, a recent article on the website Ecmweb.com ranked the top cities for electricians solely based on mean salary. The top 5 cities in that list are the following:

  • San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA – $92,390
  • New York-Newark-Jersy City, NY-NJ – $80.970
  • Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL – $79,760
  • San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA – $79,010
  • Kankakee, IL – $77,560

Yes, you really can make over $90 thousand per year as an electrician in San Francisco. But keep in mind, your cost of living will be MUCH higher there than most of the other cities listed.
